Overview

The Swat valley narrows as you climb it. Open farmland around Mingora tightens into a green corridor of pine and terraced fields, with the Swat River running fast and cold alongside the road the whole way up. Most people stop at Kalam. This Swat Kalam tour keeps going, and gives the middle day entirely to the country above it: the Ushu Forest and the alpine meadows around Mahodand Lake, reached the only way they can be reached, by 4x4 over a rough mountain track.

The tour runs from Lahore on a night coach, which puts the valley in front of you by breakfast and saves a full day of daylight driving. Two nights are spent in Kalam with dinner each evening, one of them a BBQ, and an evening around the bonfire. There is no trekking anywhere on the route, which is why it works equally well for families with children, corporate teams and groups of friends.

This one is a shared group departure rather than a private trip: a single coaster carrying between 15 and 18 travellers, which is what keeps it at this price. Book the seats you need and you travel with the rest of the group.

  • A BBQ dinner and a bonfire evening in Kalam
  • Bahrain, where the Daral and Swat rivers meet, with time to stop and look around

  • A night departure on a shared coaster, which saves a full day of daylight driving
  • No trekking anywhere on the route, so children and older travellers manage it comfortably

Day by Day Itinerary

Tap any day to open the full detail.

The group leaves Lahore at 10:00 PM and drives through the night, which is the most comfortable way to cover the distance and the reason you wake up already in the hills. Breakfast is taken on the road in the morning, and from there the drive changes character completely, running through Mingora and into the Swat valley with the river alongside.

There is a stop at Bahrain, the river town where the Daral and Swat rivers meet, the valley closes in and the old bazaar runs down towards the water. Then the last climb to Kalam. The rest of the day is unstructured on purpose. Kalam is a place to walk, sit by the river and let the altitude and the air do their work.
